Donald Trump's return to power in this parody of a democratic election once again demonstrates the political bankruptcy and terminal loss of legitimacy by an ossified, irreversibly corporate Democratic Party, and the need for working, poor and oppressed people to have our OWN political voice. We need -- and it's past time that we forged -- a grassroots, working-class, democratic socialist party, rooted in social movements (esp. a revitalized labor movement) that can coalesce and lead people's struggles on the ground and create a counter-hegemonic narrative, as well as vye for power with the parties of the capitalist class. This was already clear with the DP's derailment of Bernie Sanders and the Trump victory in 2016. But, it has been gestating even since FDR's derailment of labor's militancy in the late 30s and his orchestration of the "liberal-labor alliance," proceeding through the bipartisan assault on working and oppressed people at the dawn of the neoliberal era and the subsequent unabashed DP turn to corporate money under the DLC.
The past months have demonstrated the DP's fossilized adherence to a moribund post-WWII imperialist world order and to a domestic politics characterized by pandering to corporate wealth, legislative cretinism and continued electoral triangulation to the detriment of working and oppressed people.
Many warned around the time of Sanders' kow-tow to the DP establishment that the DP was re-enacting pre-WWII German liberal democrat Paul Von Hindenberg's enablement of Hitler. And so now we are brought to what may be the final act in this charade: contra Marx, the first was farce and this one, tragedy.
However, whether the DP or RP has been in power, the ONLY power to ever contest terrain with the corporate bipartisan assault has been that of ordinary people in the streets and workplaces. But, it's high time we approach this struggle without our hands tied.
