Tension at Hormuz: US strikes two oil tankers, Tehran considers the deal.
Despite the fragile ceasefire between the United States and Iran remaining in effect, clashes are increasing in the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. Central Command has announced that it struck two oil tankers flying the Iranian flag in the Gulf of Oman that were “violating the U.S. naval blockade in effect.” The two vessels were empty and headed for an Iranian port. According to the U.S., over 70 tankers have been prevented from “entering and exiting” Iranian ports. These ships, totaling a capacity to transport “over 166 million barrels of Iranian oil, valued at an estimated $13 billion.” In response, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmail Baghaei called it “capricious adventurism” and “reckless behavior” by the Americans.
The U.S., as Secretary Marco Rubio stated during his visit to Rome, is awaiting Iran’s response to its latest proposal to reach an agreement. “The proposal is under review and, once a final conclusion is reached, we will certainly announce it,” confirmed Iranian authorities, while Vice President JD Vance met with the Prime Minister of Qatar, Sheikh Mohammed Al Thani. According to a U.S. official to Axios, Doha represents “a vital confidential communication channel in negotiations for an agreement to end the war.” Meanwhile, the U.S. is turning to the international community: “Is it acceptable for Iran to control international waters? What is the world willing to do regarding this?” The U.S. warns: “Prepare yourselves, because another 10 countries will do so, and that is unacceptable.”
The future of Hormuz was also at the center of discussions between Rubio and Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani. The Farnesina Minister insisted on the need to reach a “strong agreement that guarantees peace and stability” with diplomacy as the preferred scenario. The Farnesina then offered to participate in international missions at Hormuz “once the ceasefire is reached,” sending “destroyers” which could first be deployed in the Red Sea and subsequently, if a decision is made to participate in the international mission, be “transferred” to the strategic waterway.
