Aveva finito la tesi ed era pronta per “la laurea cui tanto teneva”. E ora i suoi colleghi vorrebbero darglielo lo stesso, a Giorgia Sommacal, quel titolo in Ingegneria Biomedica. Si vuole omaggiare così la memoria della ragazza morta il 14 maggio durante un’immersione alle Maldive insieme alla madre Monica Montefalcone, professoressa dell’Università di Genova e agli altri tre italiani Muriel Oddenino, Federico Gualtieri e Gianluca Benedetti.
L’unico ostacolo per l’ottenimento del titolo, per cui si stanno spendendo tanti studenti dell’Università di Genova, è la mancanza degli ultimi esami della sessione estiva. Infatti, secondo il regolamento dell’UniGe, l’Ateneo può conferire un diploma di laurea alla memoria agli studenti “deceduti alle soglie della laurea qualora essi risultino in debito del solo esame di laurea”. Nel caso di Giorgia, tutta ciò che può fare l’Università è “rilasciare un diploma di riconoscimento alla memoria degli studi compiuti”.
A insistere, oltre ai suoi compagni di corso, è il team di ricerca coordinato dal professor Paolo Massobrio. “I suoi studi avvenivano in vitro usando cellule nervose, in particolare i neuroni – ha spiegato a Repubblica la ricercatrice e relatrice di tesi Martina Brofiga, sua relatrice di tesi – Giorgia cercava di trovare un protocollo per registrarne l’attività elettrofisiologica”. Una scelta che non ha stupito il padre Carlo Sommacal: “Giorgia era sempre stata incuriosita ma anche un po’ traumatizzata dalla storia di suo nonno che aveva l’Alzheimer. Non posso giurare che abbia scelto l’argomento per questo motivo, ma secondo me è così”.
Intanto le salme di madre e figlia sono arrivate ieri a Genova. Domani sera, nella chiesa di San Francesco a Pegli, si terrà il rosario in loro onore mentre i funerali sono fissati per sabato alle 11 e saranno celebrati dall’arcivescovo di Genova in forma privata per volere della famiglia.

“Degree awarded in absentia for Giorgia Sommacal”: the request of classmates at the University of Genoa.
She had finished her thesis and was ready for “the degree she held so dear.” And now her colleagues wanted to bestow it on her as well, to Giorgia Sommacal, that degree in Biomedical Engineering. It is to honor the memory of the girl who died on May 14th during an underwater excursion with her mother, Monica Montefalcone, a professor at the University of Genoa, and the other three Italians, Muriel Oddenino, Federico Gualtieri, and Gianluca Benedetti.
The only obstacle to obtaining the degree, for which so many students at the University of Genoa are striving, is the lack of the final exams from the summer session. Indeed, according to the UniGe regulations, the University can award a diploma of honor to the memory to students “deceased at the threshold of graduation if they are only in arrears for the graduation examination.” In Giorgia’s case, all the University can do is “issue a diploma of recognition for the studies undertaken.”
Besides her fellow students, the research team coordinated by Professor Paolo Massobrio is also insisting. “Her studies were conducted in vitro using nerve cells, particularly neurons – explained to Repubblica the researcher and thesis speaker, Martina Brofiga, her thesis speaker – Giorgia was trying to find a protocol for recording their electrophysiological activity.” A choice that did not surprise her father, Carlo Sommacal: “Giorgia had always been curious but also a bit traumatized by the story of her grandfather who had Alzheimer’s. I can’t swear she chose the subject for this reason, but I think it is.”
Meanwhile, the bodies of mother and daughter arrived yesterday in Genoa. Tomorrow evening, in the church of San Francesco in Pegli, a rosary will be held in their honor while the funeral is scheduled for Saturday at 11 a.m. and will be celebrated by the Archbishop of Genoa in a private ceremony at the family’s request.

Roma, 20 mag. (Adnkronos Salute) - "L'Organizzazione mondiale della sanità punta a raggiungere, entro il 2030, l'eliminazione del cancro del collo dell'utero e degli altri tumori che sono collegati all'infezione da Papillomavirus. E' un obiettivo estremamente ambizioso che richiede un'ampia copertura vaccinale e una perfetta integrazione tra la prevenzione primaria, vale a dire vaccinazione anti-Papillomavirus, e la prevenzione secondaria, vale a dire Pap test o ricerca del Dna del Papillomavirus nelle donne, a iniziare dai 25 e 30 anni". Lo ha detto Giancarlo Icardi, professore in Igiene, medicina preventiva e sanità pubblica all'università di Genova e direttore dell'Unità operativa complessa di Igiene presso l'ospedale policlinico San Martino Irccs di Genova, a un incontro con la stampa organizzato a Roma. Durante l'evento sono stati presentati i dati dell'indagine condotta da Istituto Piepoli per Msd Italia, 'I tumori da Hpv: paure, atteggiamenti, comportamenti e strategie di prevenzione', e Holobox, un mezzo innovativo che arricchisce la campagna di sensibilizzazione omnicanale lanciata lo scorso anno dalla farmaceutica sul tema della rpevenzione delle infezioni da Hpv e dei tumori correlati.
"In Italia - spiega Icardi - la vaccinazione è gratuita per le ragazzine, così come è gratuito il Pap test che ha drasticamente abbassato i dati di incidenza, cioè il numero di nuovi casi ogni anno, del 90%. Come tutti i test, però, non è perfetto al 100%, abbiamo qualche falso negativo". Questo dato "si ripercuote sul numero di nuovi casi. Gli ultimi dati ufficiali ci dicono che in Italia abbiamo tra i 2.700 e i 3.000 nuovi casi di cancro del collo dell'utero ogni anno". Nonostante lo screening, "la sopravvivenza a 5 anni per queste donne non supera il 70-75%".

Rome, May 20, (Adnkronos Salute) - “The World Health Organization aims to eliminate cervical cancer and other tumors linked to Papillomavirus infection by 2030. This is an extremely ambitious goal that requires widespread vaccination coverage and perfect integration between primary prevention – namely, anti-Papillomavirus vaccination – and secondary prevention – namely, Pap tests or Pap DNA detection in women, starting at ages 25 and 30.” This was stated by Giancarlo Icardi, professor of Hygiene, Preventive Medicine and Public Health at the University of Genoa and director of the Complex Unit of Hygiene at the San Martino Irccs Policlinico Hospital of Genoa, during a meeting with the press organized in Rome. During the event, data from the survey conducted by Istituto Piepoli for Msd Italia, ‘HPV tumors: fears, attitudes, behaviors and prevention strategies,’ and Holobox, an innovative medium that enriches the omnichannel awareness campaign launched last year by the pharmaceutical company on the theme of HPV infection and related tumor prevention, were presented. “In Italy – explains Icardi – vaccination is free for young girls, as is the Pap test, which has drastically reduced incidence rates – the number of new cases per year – by 90%. However, like all tests, it is not perfect at 100%, we have some false negatives.” This data “affects the number of new cases. The latest official data tells us that in Italy we have between 2,700 and 3,000 new cases of cervical cancer every year.” Despite screening, “the 5-year survival rate for these women does not exceed 70-75%.”
