Real artists, help an amateur out.

I often sketch things on canvas in chalk. But I've been reading books about the Old Masters, and a thing they all seem to have in common is #imprimatura #underpainting.

So my question is; When working with oil paint, what is the order of operations? Are you sketching on primed gesso with something a little more perm, like graphite, and then imprimatura, or imprimatura, then a less perm sketch like chalk once it dries?

A glimpse of what the early stages of a pet commission looks like. Underpainting is arguably one of my favorite steps because it's so loose and the stakes are low. Anything can be changed or altered at this point, but you also get a good idea of what the finished piece is going to look like.

After procrastinating this flower pot painting for over a month, I've finally summoned the courage to try to finish it! 😅 So far, it's been a challenge, but I think it's coming along quite nicely, so I'll post a few more photo updates in the next few days showing my progress. 🎨

Have made a start on my final Janis portrait for my college portrait project with a watercolour underpainting and small bits of collage in the background. Will start on the acrylic paints next. Can't wait to see myself how it will end up as have a rough idea in my head but whether it will happen or not is another story 🙂
