Whilst it may be that some Universities in the UK have engineered their own problems here is a sobering quote from the OECD: “In Chile, only 47% of tertiary education expenditure comes from government sources, and in the United Kingdom, it is just 43%, the lowest across OECD and partner countries with data”.

https://www.oecd.org/en/publications/education-at-a-glance-2025_1c0d9c79-en/full-report/how-is-tertiary-education-financed_2845d742.html

(The US spends, for example, about four times as much public money relative to GDP as we do on Higher Education BTW, twice as much if you include R and D spend).

That’s a governmental choice, driving the whole show. Combined with the cap on home UG fees and an unfriendly visa regime this isn’t a sustainable model for students or providers.

Ah, the romance of conquest! Isn't in nice to teach 8-year-olds to identify with the Empire, at school? BBC has already made such cool beat for that.

I wonder whether the Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL) realises that the increase in parental complaints is because UK schools are not fit for purpose & parents want better for their children than school leaders are able (or willing?) to provide. The level of blame-shifting onto parents by a broken & dysfunctional education system is disappointing. Nevertheless, school leaders will comtinue to take home massive salaries.

The Labour government's chatter about SEND changes is disingenuous. Phillipson says their proposed reforms can improve the standard of provision and quality of education. They can't.

I'm speaking as the parent of a teenage son with SEND needs in a mainstream secondary school where the school has a policy of NOT marking books or children's work. This is now common in UK schools. Just imagine people who make policies like this completely responsible for SEND!

Excellent (if sobering) piece by the Guardian's John Harris on the forthcoming legislation on the reform of SEND provision for children with special educational needs (in England).

Signs are that behind all the big nice words, Keir Starmer's Labour ultimately wants to cut costs, weaken state or school accountability, and remove parental agency.

This debate deserves our attention. If you are in the UK (in England, specifically), write to your MP and tell them to speak up!

I fear that Labour’s special needs revolution will instead be a catastrophic letdown

A familiar story is unfolding: of lofty aims undermined by meagre budgets, constant anonymous briefing – and a drive to remove families’ basic rights, says Guardian columnist John Harris
