"Nutrition" can be like magic, illustrated by this paper in Ped Res showing that colostrum (nasal instillation) is a strong stimulator of neurogenic growth of nerve tissue, in a murine model. Great basic science, looking fw to see if/how this can be translated in clinical research!

Human preterm colostrum stimulates outgrowth in neurogenic tissue - PubMed

The hypothesis has been raised that neonatal brain damage in a preterm infant could potentially be ameliorated by intranasal application of maternal breast milk. In an in-vitro model using neonatal murine olfactory bulb explants a significant stimulatory effect by human preterm colostrum is observed …

Thoughtful and provocative #UENPS talk by prof Dieter Wolke about long term outcomes (into adulthood) after being a preterm infant.
He makes so many important points, while we measure XYZ (IQ, ICD-codes, MRI changes, blood pressure etcetc), what matters to people are “life tasks”, such as making friends and relations, having own children. See slides for some data.

From the #UENPS radar - a wonderful example of tradition-based medicine: a survey study in Croatia on cord clamping and cord management revealed a strong regional pattern within Croatia, how the umbilical cord stump was managed.

(the #SweMed perspective, nothing is done with the umbilical cord except some parental advice about "light" cleansing with soap and water)

Slowly getting started at the Do's and Don'ts Congress hosted by #UENPS and #EFCNI where Julia Bielicki, Christof Dame, Tuuli Metsvaht, Chiara Minotti, Tina Perme and me from the #NeoIPC Clinical Practice Network will offer a Workshop on dealing with outbreaks in neonatal intensive care.

At the #UENPS conf and caught these words in a workshop slide.
