Científicos de la Universidad de California han logrado un avance crucial en la computación cuántica, demostrando que es posible construir computadoras cuánticas a gran escala utilizando chips imperfectos. Investigadores de la Universidad de California, Riverside, han publicado un estudio que podría cambiar por completo el calendario de la computación cuántica. El avance, que se ha compartido en la revista Nature, demuestra que los ordenadores cuánticos pueden construirse a partir de múltiples chips más pequeños e imperfectos, y que aún así, el sistema podría funcionar de manera confiable. Este hallazgo es fundamental porque el principal obstáculo para el desarrollo de computadores cuánticos a gran escala era la dificultad de construir hardware cuántico perfecto, libre de errores y con un número masivo de qubits.

La investigación se basa en la simulación de arquitecturas cuánticas realistas, compuestas por muchos chips más pequeños interconectados. Los científicos demostraron que estos sistemas pueden seguir funcionando de forma fiable incluso con conexiones y hardware imperfectos, sentando así las bases para ensamblar grandes sistemas cuánticos a partir de unidades más pequeñas.

Este avance técnico es crucial, ya que hasta ahora el progreso en el campo se medía principalmente por el número de qubits, pero sin la «tolerancia a fallos», estos qubits adicionales no garantizaban resultados fiables. El estudio demuestra que el camino hacia la computación cuántica funcional y a gran escala no tiene que depender de la perfección del hardware, lo que podría acortar el plazo de implementación y permitir que los ordenadores cuánticos aborden problemas complejos en campos como la química, la medicina y la criptografía mucho antes de lo esperado.
