A prototype two-stroke internal combustion engine that uses a rotary exhaust valve eliminates the need for oil mixed with fuel, resulting in cleaner and more efficient combustion. It can therefore be run using natural gas, hydrogen, and biodiesel as well as gas.
The defining characteristic of a two-stroke engine is to fire (combust) every time the piston is at top dead center. This makes them highly power dense, but also notoriously makes two-stroke engines dirty, inefficient, and not prone to long lifespans.
