Overview Tuskegee is a historic city located in the east-central portion of the State of Alabama and serves as the county seat of Macon County, Alabama, most notable for the Tuskegee Institute as well as the Tuskegee Airmen. Today, the community is directly associated with Tuskegee University and the Tuskegee Human and Civil Rights Multicultural Center. Highways located within the area include Routes 29, 80, 81, and 199, with Interstate 85 bypassing the area to the north.

On March 19, 1941, the U.S. War Department ordered the creation of the 99th Pursuit Squadron, better known as the Tuskegee Airmen.
