'I went through a phase of playing Johnny Cash songs in the style of George Formby, for my own amusement. One night I was sat in the hotel room, singing [in Formby’s’ accent] “I’ve shot a man in Reno!” There was a bang on the wall and I realised it was like three in the morning. I felt like an absolute twat.'

Andy Eastwood has some online ukulele workshops coming up, exploring George Formby's techniques:
Took the plunge this afternoon and tuned my Ken Timms soprano ukulele up from C to D… Yes, people have been doing that for well over a century and yes, the gut strings are rated for either tuning, but I worry that the bridge is going to rip off at the best of times so tightening it to ADF#B is clearly going to be concerning for me. That's one reason why I started with my banjolele (strings attach to a metal tailpiece) and my Martin HPL uke (using Rotosound D tuning strings, which are lower tension) before trying the Timms.
I suppose it could explode horribly at any moment, but my word… the sound is remarkable. Found myself drifting off and noodling simply to listen to it.
Of course, I soon went back to playing smutty old music hall stuff, but now it sounds a bit better 😁
I've hardly played the uke much at all over the past couple of weeks, certainly nowhere near as much as I'd have liked, due to fatigue, but I'm moderately awake now and aiming to make the most of it.
Typed up another ukulele songsheet, this one for a *completely clean* song by Ivor Biggun, his tribute to George Formby. You can watch the video to get the tune, if you're unfamiliar with it:
