A 7.8-magnitude quake hit southern Turkey and northern Syria on 6 February 2023, killing more than 40,000 people and erasing entire cities. Then and now photographs show the scale of devastation and the enormity of the reconstruction
red. Rewind 2023: One of the most devastating earthquakes struck southern Turkey and northern Syria at the beginning of this year, with magnitudes of 7.8 and 7.5, killing over 60,000 people, including thousands of refugees. In total, 9.1 million people were and are affected by the earthquake disaster and 3 million people have been displaced.
On February 6, 2023, two major earthquakes with moment magnitudes of 7.9 and 7.6 occurred in southeastern Türkiye, near the Syria-Türkiye border. The two major earthquakes were close in time and space and can be considered twins. The shaking from the earthquakes caused significant damage to buildings, roads, and people.
Three studies now published in The Seismic Record (TSR) offer an initial look at the February 6, 2023 earthquakes in south-central Türkiye and northwestern Syria, including how, where, and how fast the earthquakes ruptured and how they combined as a "devastating doublet" to produce damaging ground shaking.
After powerful earthquakes struck southeast Türkiye, causing immense devastation. We responded immediately, supporting local NGOs to provide crucial mental health, water, sanitation, and hygiene assistance to the affected population.
We focused on psychosocial support, water, sanitation, hygiene, and non-food items. Essential items like food, hygiene kits, tents, and other materials were distributed to those in need.
We also supported the establishment of a field hospital. #TurkeyEarthquake
