In 1914 The Strand published the first English translation of 'The Apparition' by Ivan #Turgenev, accompanied by a dramatic double-page illustration by Ernest Wallcousins. (I've had to scan it in two parts otherwise I'd have damaged the volume's spine) #PhantomsFriday #BookChatWeekly #RussianWriters

I want to see them all, Russian literature in its faces and gestures, not in bronze and on the pedestals of monuments, but in life - Leo Tolstoy in his hotly heated room in a house in Khamovniki, Chekhov in an annex in Melikhov, where he received patients, Bunin in his cold, wind-blown from the sea villa "Jeannette" in Grasse.... It used to be rare old photographs or paintings by artists, now all we have to do is say a few words of promt - and the AI will give us its sterile fantasy.
This is how the AI sees Ivan Turgenev in Paris. Turgenev, as we know, lived half his life in France. Here he is young, apparently this is his first visit to Paris in 1848. So, he is 30 years old, and "Notes of a Hunter" has only just begun....

Doubly Enslaved. Gender and Slavery in Turgenev’s “Yermolai and the Miller’s Wife”

In the story Ermolaj and the Miller’s Wife, Ivan Turgenev develops a dual social critique that operates simultaneously on two levels: the institution of serfdom and gender inequality. This is all…

Hi!

I’m trying to get active on here, have no idea how to find the right people, so I thought I’d introduce myself.

I’m 27 y/o, from Sweden. I work as a geologist and I spend a lot of time reading books and listening to music. I’m mostly into classics/literary fiction, but also enjoy good #scifi & #fantasy. Some writers I enjoy are: #Tolkien, #RobinHobb, #Turgenev, #dostoyevsky #Zweig, #MervynPeake, #Bulgakov

I used to be part of the ASOIAF fandom on twitter, but that was like 10 years ago…

Today in Writing History December 15, 1905: The Pushkin House was established in Saint Petersburg, Russia, to preserve the cultural heritage of Alexander Pushkin, (6/6/1799–2/10/1837). Pushkin was a Russian poet, playwright, and novelist of the Romantic era. He was influenced by Enlightenment writers and thinkers, like Diderot and Voltaire. He spoke out in support of social reform, and wrote poems, like “Ode to Liberty,” leading to the government exiling him from the capital. In 1920 the Pushkin House was renamed the Institute of New Russian Literature, with the main objective of preparing authoritative "academic" editions of works by Pushkin, Turgenev, Dostoevsky, and others.

I like Dostoevsky the best. Then Gogol, Bulgakov & Chernyshevsky.
