@ellieraejaye some other models that stand out are the Sanyo MPC-1 aka Wavy1 (or the Wavy2 in white and black), or perhaps the Sony HitBit F1-XD with its black case with red highlight?
While plenty find it ugly, the design of the Panasonic FS-A1GT also appeals to me. It's also basically the most capable #MSX machine, since it's the final iteration of the standard, the #turboR.

Edit: but I'll never part with my trusty Philips NMS 8250 though, despite it being 'only' an #MSX2 and less compact and not as sexy. 😅

Sanyo MPC-1 - MSX Wiki

Contrary to what its name may suggest, the Sanyo MPC-1, a.k.a Wavy1, was not the first MSX computer released by Sanyo.

FOR fun AND giggles, here's the not-so-accelerated version: https://msxpen.com/codes/-OEPmABzk3LsOEgj2yNp

Note that it still is compiled code. The impact of using integers is impressive as well. First try removing line 7, and then removing line 5.

And the options, you can switch to the MSX TurboR, for a nice speed-up. Still, it can't hold a candle to the hardware accelerated version.

Check out this MSX code!

@gee8sh If you select a #turboR machine on msxpen it still is OK without X-BASIC. The R800 has much improved ALU and hardware multiply. But I don't know if the hardware multiply actually used by the BASIC ROM.

@RandySimons

No important reason. I'm sure I was using sprite$() in an earlier version of the code, but I think the vpoke'ing yielded simpler code.

Mind you, for some reason, if I initialized the sprites after the turbo on call, x-basic was complaining about the dim variables.

Were you asking because you thought I could've initialized the sprites after the turbo on call? I'm still not familiar with all the limitations of #xbasic.

I didn't know the bit about #TurboR! I used to program on an #MSX 1 and now I have a physical #MSX 2.

The history of MSX computers

YouTube

Tomorrow is the sixth of May. @bitsofbas last year came up with the wonderful idea to make this day about #MSX, and call it #MaySiXth, and share our love for this wonderful #homecomputer from the #80s in whatever way you can think of.
So, if you have an #MSX1, #MSX2, #MSX2Plus, #turboR, #OneChipMSX, or similar, whether it is real or emulated, fire it up, take a photo or screenshot, and share it tomorrow with the hashtags #MaySiXth and #MSX. 💙

@syx oh, and the reason @bitsofbas suggested to get a Japanese model if you are in the USA is mostly because those models will have a voltage closer to your native one, as European models tend to be designed for 220V or 240V.
#MSX2Plus and #turboR bring a newer VDP, which may be nice, but the amount of games that support it, is limited.
#MSXTurboR adds support for the #R800 CPU in addition to the previous generations' #Z80, which certainly can give a nice speed boost, especially in day-to-day software like file managers when browsing solid state media with large directories, but it comes with a huge price markup, and only a limited catalogue of games.

For comparison, here's the amounts of software indexed in #GenerationMSX per generation of #MSX:

  • MSX (4193)
  • #MSX2 (2972)
  • MSX2+ (145)
  • Turbo-R (179)

You can use https://www.generation-msx.nl/software/result?sy%5B%5D=Turbo-R&sy%5B%5D=MSX2%2B to list all MSX2+ and turboR software indexed in #GenMSX to get an idea of what kind of games support those generations, or use the checkboxes in the sidebar to filter in/out other generations or specs.

Generation MSX

People complaining once again about the #MSX spec limitations of the #MSXdev competition.
So, this year I decided to suggest that those who want to compete with #MSX2, #MSX2Plus, #turboR or other #MSX configurations that don't match the #MSX1 limitations of the #compo, to participate in one of the many #demoparties out there. :)

Feel free to comment here with your suggestions for #demoscene events that welcome #MSX in their specific compos or #WILDCompos. :)

MSXdev'21 is ON | MSX Resource Center

BAM! Just like that, the new MSXdev kicks off. This popular comp, which has been running since 2003, enters its 17th edition already.

That's pretty cool: #ThunderForceIV tune on a work-in-progress #MSX music #tracker supporting #Konami's #SCC soundchip, and the builtin #ProgrammableSoundGenerator aka #PSG, as well as the #SN: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j2bHDKXdXW4

It has some pretty high specs though, requiring the latest revision in the line of MSX standards, a #turboR machine, as well as the #V9990 VDP (for instance in the form of a #GFX9000 or #Video9000 video expansion cartridge).
