Wanted to try doodling a rare anthro species. You never see tuatara characters. They're not lizards!

Emily Keeble at Palaeocast has just produced a great interview about rhynchocephalians with Dr. Victor Beccari, a Brazilian paleontologist who works on them. The tuatara of Aotearoa / New Zealand is the only living rhynchocephalian, but they were much more diverse in the Mesozoic.
Saw *heaps* of tuatara at Zealandia today. Nice warm weather for them.

I've never seen a tuatara run this fast before!
#Tuatara v #takahe. Let's get #taikaWaititi to make the full-length feature version, eh?
Seen at Nga Manu, Kapiti Coast, Aotearoa-New Zealand
Tuatara are a rare reptile found only in New Zealand. They are the last survivors of an order of reptiles that thrived in the age of the dinosaurs.
Tuatara are New Zealand’s largest reptile. Adult males are about 0.5 metres in length, and weigh up to 1.5 kg when fully grown.
The male has a distinctive crest of spines running along the neck and down the back. He can erect these spines to attract females or when fighting with other males.
The colour of tuatara ranges from olive-green, to brown, to orange-red. They can also change colour over their lifetime. They shed their skin once per year.

I'm sure I read about a legless rhynchocephalian. I even think I saw a picture of a fossil. But I can't recall what it is named. Anyone know anything about it?

My sister and I had a lovely morning walking in Zealandia ecosanctuary. Such an amazing place to have within a city 🥰
We saw a great variety of birds. Didn’t get any pics of those sorry, but the tuatara were easy to photograph! Walking through the native bush was blissful.
