That means that a large surge of water is not expected on land but that strong, potentially destructive currents are expected and could affect anyone in or near the water, including at beaches and in harbors, said Lori Dengler, an emeritus professor of geology at California State Polytechnic University, Humboldt. “This is not a good night to go down to the beach to see if you might see something,” she said.
