I've seen some pushback on Anne Applebaum that argues the last straw should have been #AgolfShitler sending his #ICEtapo thugs to attack AN AMERICAN CITY, terrorizing & murdering its citizens on the streets. That's not wrong (especially since we can see the fact THAT IT WASN'T has already inspired him to now threaten TO ORDER ACTIVE DUTY TROOPS to back them up in his assault on THE CONSTITUTIONAL SOVEREIGN ('We, the People').
But Applebaum was talking principally about the last straw FOR THE GLOBAL GEOPOLITICAL ORDER and its defenders at home & abroad, and here is where Greenland holds a particularly key position (as I have argued here before). It's too easy for those defenders abroad to look at the #TurdReich's atrocities in Minnesota (just like Putin's in Chechnya, or China's in Xinjiang) and say, yeah, this is awful but there are sovereign subsystems in the rules-based order whose role it is to make those determinations--and we can't SAVE the rules-based order BY BREAKING IT OURSELVES to stop him unilaterally. And it's too easy for those defenders AT HOME to look at these atrocities and say, well, this is awful but the Constitution says it's CONGRESS' role, or THE COURTS' role to make those determinations--and we can't SAVE the Constitution BY BURNING IT OURSELVES to stop him unilaterally.
But with Greenland, IT'S SOVEREIGNTY ITSELF THAT IS UNDER ATTACK, and it is us as the defenders who are going to be called upon to act. US, PERSONALLY. And neither an American Flag or General Officer ordered to attack a NATO ally (or, to be fair, a U.S. city, should that actually come to pass), nor the head-of-state of any other NATO country facing Denmark's invocation of Article 5, is going to have the luxury of waiting on the rules-based order to rule for them: they're going to have to make a decision IN THE MOMENT, whether to do as THE LAW demands, or to cower before what der #Trumpenfuhrer does.
And that may provide a unique opportunity Minnesota DOESN'T (or at least hasn't thusfar), where following our legal & ethical obligations CREATES A DE FACTO STATE OF WAR WITH AMERICA'S WOULD-BE DICTATOR ANYHOW...and one which those defenders might as well go all-in on to remove the threat once and for all.
