RT by @CopernicusEU: The tropics cover 40% of Earth's surface & hold 80% of global biodiversity - protecting them is vital!
#TropicsDay

Summer 2023's heat 🌡️ led to intense bushfires & serious vegetation loss in N-Australia. #CLMS Burnt Area data show the massive burn scars.

Burnt Area 2019 - present (raster 300 m), global, monthly - version 3.1

The Burnt Area products burn scars, surfaces which have been sufficiently affected by fire to display significant changes in the vegetation cover (destruction of dry material, reduction or loss of green material) and in the ground surface (temporarily darker because of ash). Monthly products are available at global scale in the spatial resolution of 300 m and cover the period from 2019 to present.

RT by @EU_ENV: Tropical forests are crucial #ForPeopleForPlanet. Yet, they face threats from climate change, deforestation, urbanization, and more.

#TropicsDay is a reminder for #ClimateAction and the urgent need to step up #GenerationRestoration efforts.

UN Biodiversity Conference (COP 15)

Updated on 15 August 2022: The latest information from the organizer, the Secretariat of the Convention on Biodiversity.  Despite on-going efforts, biodiversity is deteriorating worldwide and this decline is projected to worsen with business-as-usual scenarios. The UN Biodiversity Conference will convene governments from around the world to agree to a new set of goals for nature over the next decade through the Convention on Biological Diversity post-2020 framework process. The framework sets out an ambitious plan to implement broad-based action to bring about a transformation in society’s relationship with biodiversity and to ensure that, by 2050, the shared vision of living in harmony with nature is fulfilled. The Conference will also look at the implementation of the protocols of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) that deal with the fair and equitable sharing of benefits from the use of nature, and the safe transport, handling and labelling of Living Modified Organisms. The first part of COP-15 included the opening of the Meetings and addressed agenda items that were identified as essential for the continuation of the operations of the Convention and the Protocols by the Bureau. This included meetings about administrative matters and technical issues related to CBD programmes. There was also a high-level segment on 12 and 13 October 2021. Participants focused on the development of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework. All sessions at COP-15 will be streamed live at cbd.int/live and the main schedule is also available.
