Our Alocasia cuprea is in the small greenhouse and is loving it. Even in the relative chill of night it thrives. The humidity in there stays high (right now 73% and outside is 36%), so I am not too surprised we're getting some large leaves. But I am surprised by thriving in lower temperatures (SoCal relative to Borneo, anyway)! So I am learning that isn't as much of a deal for tropicals as the humidity is.

The pic has a metal drink can for comparison. My outstretched hand is exactly 8" and these get up to 24" big!!

I saw this dried-out seed case of some sort in the Garfield Park Conservatory, today, but couldn't find any identifying information.

Any ideas? (It was a bit larger than a softball.)

Today's houseplant is aa pride and joy - an Alocasia "Kuching Mask". I got this one just about a year ago, on a reject sale. It had one leaf and was maybe about 40cm high. It started making more leaves in the spring, and lived outside in high summer (once the minimum temperature was consistently above 10°C), in the shade. It has done well - I have repotted it twice, and it is now about 1.6m (5') tall, not counting the pot.
