Today we recognize World Chagas Disease Day, a crucial occasion to raise awareness about Chagas disease, often referred to as the "silent disease." This condition primarily affects marginalized communities lacking access to healthcare. Early detection and treatment are vital to prevent serious complications such as cardiac and digestive issues.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗴𝗮𝘀 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲?

Caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, Chagas disease is transmitted mainly through triatomine bugs. It can also spread through organ transplants, blood transfusions, and from mother to child during pregnancy.

𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗬𝗲𝗮𝗿’𝘀 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗲

The theme for 2025 is "Prevent, Control, Care: Everyone's Role in Chagas Disease." This highlights the importance of public awareness and support for early detection and ongoing care initiatives.

𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀

Despite a decline in cases in Latin America, infections are rising in non-endemic regions like the U.S. and Europe. Increased vigilance from governments and health organizations is essential for controlling this disease.

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗴𝗮𝘀 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲:

- Avoid sleeping outdoors or in poorly constructed homes
- Use insecticide-treated materials
- Practice safe food and water precautions
- Be cautious with blood transfusions and organ transplants in endemic areas

"Due to rising temperatures, the Organization of Ibero-American States (EOI) has warned of new threats. The tiger mosquito, from Southeast Asia, has begun to colonize much of Catalonia and the Valencian Community. Tropical diseases such as malaria, Zika virus, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever, West Nile virus, and others are re-emerging in Spain in areas where they were previously eradicated or never occurred, as high temperatures allow the vectors (mainly mosquitoes) that transmit them to persist."—Juanjo Santos

Spain Ranks First Among European Countries in Terms of Heat-Related Mortality - Climate Scorecard

However, the mitigation measures implemented thus far are insufficient.   Spain ranks first among European countries where heat-related mortality has increased the most during this century. This is highlighted in the second report of ‘The Lancet Countdown’ indicators in Europe, led by the Barcelona Supercomputing Center-National Supercomputing Center (BSC-CNS) in collaboration with 40 other European...

"Globally, Guinea worm has declined from an estimated 3.56 million cases across 20 countries in 1986 to just 14 human cases in 5 countries in 2023 — mostly through bottom-up, low-technology efforts similar to those in South Sudan. What’s more, this has been achieved despite the lack of a vaccine or drug treatment for the parasite."

Even with no drug or vaccine, eradication of Guinea worm is in sight

Community-based efforts have reduced the parasitic infection to a handful of cases in humans each year, but the emergence of infections in dogs and other animals threatens to derail progress.
