1 If I start seeing this (we don't eat out nearly as much as we used too, pension rates don't permit it) I will (a) tell them why I'm not tipping and that I strongly object to this and (b) I will probably start using #TripAdvisor to register my objection
2 This is *totally a choice of those configuring the terminals and the software*, be they owners or "IT" staff. It is yet another form of greed, no doubt being pushed by the vendors of terminals/software to promote "sales" and may well be another of these covert efforts to shift the "culture" by foreign owned companies. I'd have to dig into this more but I did see this with the software I had to configure at the restaurant in Bungendore, so I know it is a *choice* (what the default is on particular software I can't say, but it might well be defaulted to "on" these days - like the "let's rip off the customer just like we all did with credit card surcharges defaulting to the highest interest rate card and actively make EFTPOS payment difficult" ).

We have far too much greed in contemporary Australia. We don't need this added to it.
I suspect there might also be pushes from Visa and Mastercard (% on every single dollar of the transactions) but maybe that is too cynical of me. Maybe... 🙄
