#ForestFriday

A magical tribute to Canada's #GnarliestTree - in #AvatarGrove in #PortRenfrew.

We fought hard to save the ancient trees & their life-sustaining wild ecosystems, to get Avatar Grove area protected & turned into a public park. It was previously on the corporate deforestation list prior to the hard grassroots fight to save this area of Port Renfrew, where old growth forests were rapidly dwindling due to colonial capitalist style of short-term greedy gains & putting nature last. Nature should be first.

Canada's Knottiest Tree

By public opinion, this is Canada's knottiest tree.

Atlas Obscura

In late June, #BritishColumbia & #GovernmentOfCanada announced that they’ve helped non-profit foundations & trusts buy 8 parcels of land from private owners for #OldGrowth #Conservation, largely on and around #VancouverIsland.

However, all but one of the #forests included in this purchase announcement do not contain old-growth #trees, defined by the #BCgovernment as 250-year-old #CoastalForests & 140-year-old forests in parts of the #BCInterior. Instead, 7 of 8 purchased properties contain what’s called “recruitment” old-growth — that is, forests that have been #logged.

Photos taken by members of #environmental organization #AncientForestAlliance #AFA earlier this month show massive old-growth trees being logged by #BCTimberSales, #BCNDP’s own #logging agency, in the Nahmint Valley on Vancouver Island. Some of these trees are more than 500 yrs old, according to the organization.

BC’s latest ‘old growth’ conservation announcement is mostly not about old growth

All but one of the forests included in this purchase announcement do not contain old-growth trees. Instead, seven of the eight purchased properties contain what’s called “recruitment” old-growth — that is, forests that have been logged.

My nature & ancient trees loving heart breaks, every time I see more clearcut deforestation. With the rapid acceleration of climate change, our foolish, greedy, short-sighted government continues to accept dirty deals with ecocidal corporations - going against public interests. They greenwash & whitewash while still allowing mass clearcuts to happen in disappearing ancient forests on the island.

Please - don't stop fighting to #ProtectOldGrowth #forests 🌲❤️🌲 #AncientTrees need #ForestDefenders in times of increased, rampant #CorporateGreed & sellout #ecocide enabling governments ✊️

They keep killing the ancients.
Men who kill elder trees, are men who kill their children's futures.
Souls must be disconnected from nature & their spirits desperate for money, for them to be OK destroying #OldGrowth forests, for a temporary paycheque.
There are more ethical ways to earn a living.
Stop believing industrial & government #greenwashing lies.
#ClearcutLogging kills #ecosystems & throws #ecological balance out of whack.

Government tells us to not fret, that they're managing #forestry better - they're #greedy, #sellout #LIARS. You can go see for yourself, how many clearcuts are still happening on big scales, at several places across Vancouver Island & some parts of BC interior where greedy corporations are decimating the last inland #TemperateRainforest in the world. Our #neoliberal BC NDP government is OK with ongoing mass ecocide - they get money from industry lobbyists 🤑🤮😡

Don't stop, fighting to #ProtectOldGrowth #forests 🌲❤️🌲 #AncientTrees need #ForestDefenders in times of increased, rampant #CorporateGreed & sellout #ecocide enabling governments ✊️
