We fought hard to save the ancient trees & their life-sustaining wild ecosystems, to get Avatar Grove area protected & turned into a public park. It was previously on the corporate deforestation list prior to the hard grassroots fight to save this area of Port Renfrew, where old growth forests were rapidly dwindling due to colonial capitalist style of short-term greedy gains & putting nature last. Nature should be first.

In late June, #BritishColumbia & #GovernmentOfCanada announced that they’ve helped non-profit foundations & trusts buy 8 parcels of land from private owners for #OldGrowth #Conservation, largely on and around #VancouverIsland.
However, all but one of the #forests included in this purchase announcement do not contain old-growth #trees, defined by the #BCgovernment as 250-year-old #CoastalForests & 140-year-old forests in parts of the #BCInterior. Instead, 7 of 8 purchased properties contain what’s called “recruitment” old-growth — that is, forests that have been #logged.
Photos taken by members of #environmental organization #AncientForestAlliance #AFA earlier this month show massive old-growth trees being logged by #BCTimberSales, #BCNDP’s own #logging agency, in the Nahmint Valley on Vancouver Island. Some of these trees are more than 500 yrs old, according to the organization.

#BritishColumbia #OldGrowth #activists have taken before and after photos of a large area of an #AncientGrove that was #clearcut on #VancouverIsland near #PortAlberni in the #NahmintValley.
The #AncientForestAlliance says that many of the massive #trees that were cut down were over 500 years old, some being up to nine feet across.
Now that the grove has been cut, they are urging the #BCgovernment to immediately correct misidentified #AtRisk #OldGrowth #forests that could be eligible for #LoggingDeferrals.
