Spooky thing about writing about old movies on Substack is that every time I start to type, some correspondence with the film pops up in the news. This time it's Lord Houchen's freeport which is like an early 20C Chinese treaty port only operating in reverse, shipping capital offshore in the way Shanghai shipped capital to London, Amsterdam and Paris 100 years ago.
