Why Yogyakarta Stands Out: A Traveler’s Perspective

My Recent Trip to Yogyakarta

Yogyakarta surprised me in a good way. You see the history, but you also notice how people interact with each other. Locals treat each other with a steady respect, and the way they engage with visitors feels calm and natural.

I have spent more than three years in Jakarta and more than four years in Bali. Yogyakarta felt very different from both. There is a quiet confidence in the city. People seem aware that their home was once the most important city in Indonesia. It was a kingdom, and that history still shows in the way they carry themselves.

A City Built Around Culture and Education

Yogyakarta is known for its universities and learning centers. You meet many students who work hard to improve their English and aim for higher education. The general attitude toward learning feels stronger than what you see in many other parts of the country.

The city also has plenty of historical buildings, museums, and cultural sites. It offers a full view of Indonesian heritage without feeling overcrowded.

Visiting Borobudur and Prambanan

Trips to Borobudur and Prambanan were refreshing. There were visitors, but not the overwhelming numbers you see in Bali. You are not stuck behind a line of a hundred people waiting for the same photo spot. From a business standpoint, the low crowd size is not ideal, but as a traveller, it gives you room to enjoy the place.

This difference in tourism creates a different type of visitor. People come for culture, learning, and history instead of social media photos.

A Different Kind of Atmosphere Compared to Bali

This is not a criticism of Bali at all. Bali has its own strengths, but it is a high-traffic tourist area. Yogyakarta keeps more of its traditional character. The pace is calmer, and the people feel more focused on education and local identity.

With so many students around, you see ambition everywhere. Many are working toward better futures and higher skills. That alone gives the city a unique energy.

I enjoyed the trip and plan to return.

A strange reality of Koh Samui is that a visitor would almost never see a mature - 60 years + Thai person around the tourist areas of: Lamai, Chaweng, Maenam or on Koh Phangan

Visit Nathon, the administrative capital of the island, where most Thai people on Samui live and you will see mature Thai people running their businesses, looking after grandkids, working in Government and in the Public hospital as staff and patients.
