Seen on Mastodon: an excellent list of mistaken beliefs that create problems for translators even beyond the software localisation industry. Falsehoods about languages

Falsehoods programmers believe about languages

This is what we have to put up with in the software localisation industry.

One FR>EN translation dilemma that arises when translating documents for conferences is that the FR text will mention an obscure guest speaker like, say, "Jean Thibault" and then refer to him repeatedly as "Monsieur Thibault" and you have to spend an hour googling to confirm whether he has a Ph.D. because you must refer to him as "Dr. Thibault" in EN if (but only if) he does. #translation #French #English #translationproblems

@totobe

So

Is @Mastodon / Mastodon dot Social now refusing to translate posts not written in English?

I see no "Translate" option anywhere, and my local instance uses DeepL.com but even that is not offered to me

This is not the first time by any means

Not very "inclusive"

What gives?
