Perhaps, on this issue, Australia ought to be #transactional (as is the US administration) and non-partisan in Defence acquisitions. I doubt that China would sell us SSNs but there are other markets without restrictive ‘allies ties’, more reliable and at cheaper prices. This runs counter to the very conservative outlook of Defence though, so don’t hold your breath.

Note the links to the article is ‘paywalled’ so did not read (requiring any kind of signing-in is tantamount to paywalling). I’m not having it. I also note that the author is known for letting his bias show and I don’t always agree with his opinion.
