Excitement was caused on a #Newtown tramcar as it was passing John street about 4.30 p.m. yesterday when fire suddenly burst from the control box and the front platform became enveloped in smoke. It was found that the control had been burnt out, and the car had to be shunted back to the sheds

A suggestion that danger zones should be created in the city in places where crowds wanted to board #tramcars, was made at last night’s meeting of the City Council by Councillor J. Aston. Councillor Aston said it appeared to him that there was a danger in the city from #cars attempting to drive through a crowd before the tram had actually come to a stop. This was particularly noticeable at Bowen street corner, where motor-cars were daily seen attempting to race tramcars. He suggested that dangerous corners should be termed danger-zones, in order to prevent any possibility of accident.
