Imrich Bugár, the first world champion in men's discus, dies at 70

Imrich Bugár, the first world champion in men’s discus and an Olympic medalist for Czechoslovakia, has died at 70. His former club, Dukla, announced his death on Wednesday without specifying the cause. Born in 1955 in what is now southern Slovakia, Bugár was a leading figure in discus during the 1980s. He won gold at the inaugural IAAF World Championships in 1983. Bugár was denied participation in the 1984 Olympics due to a Soviet-led boycott. He retired in 1995 and denied involvement in a state-sponsored doping program.
