TIL that the federal government had committed to establishin an AI Safety Institute (AISI) when it signed the Seoul Declaration at South Korea’s AI summit in 2024. To date, nothing concrete has been put in place. Cam Wilson’s article brings us up to date with what this AISI is all about and the different ‘camps’ alligned to different attitudes towards #GenAISlop lobbying about it.

I have to say I’m currently with the realist ‘here-and-now’ group.

I am mainly concerned about threats to privacy, PID, doxxing and cyberbullying, surveillance, and censorship. Particularly where it threatens minority identities (gender, race, ethnicity, etc), with a mind to an untrustable State.

I am trying to make a case to a well-meaning but tech-naive committee that our organization's mission to "meet the moment" and protect these communities is incompatible with continued reliance on corporate platforms, particularly for sensitive, private internal documents.

I figure this a pretty popular subject on the Fediverse. I know I've seen stuff like this go by -- but I don't always have bookmarks, nor is memory necessarily good enough to find it again.

I just would like to make sure I'm not missing obvious/egregious cases that I should be including.

I have started a file to collect sources on untrustworthy behavior from Big Tech SaaS platforms.

To include: Google Office and competitors, Facebook/Twitter/corp social media, etc.

What are some good sources?

Well-sourced articles from trusted sources are best, but anecdotes may be useful. Obviously don't dox yourself in the process.

Part of making the case for self-hosting our internal and community digital services.

To my surprise, Justin Webb, interviewer on BBC radio 4 this morning mentioned the Jeavons paradox.
It was in response to a data centre chief claiming they were getting more efficient.
Sadly he didn't push the point when the interviewer gave a weak, irrelevant answer.

Really happy that @peertube reached its highest funding goal. Such an important project for the #Fediverse, adding several relevant improvements to video hosting, watching and streaming.

Especially in this age of toxic tech, like Instagram, TikTok and Youtube, designed for addiction, absorbing people's time, mind and killing concentration.

No to #toxicTech, let's mobilise more people to connect to the community networks, designed for human wellbeing, for life.

@cyberlyra still a lot of work ahead. I'm especially concerned about the deep integration of #toxictech in the government. I'm working as scientist/professor in Mexico. Our email, cloud, conference software are provided by Microsoft (for all public institutions, as far as I know). And or president, Dr Claudia Sheinbaum, answers Donald Trump on X!
