If you want to understand #Texas / #US #Southern culture / #ToxicIndividualism better, explore this memory with me:
I was briefly visiting someone's home in earlyish 2020 in the Dallas area (I will omit the context for privacy reasons, but let it suffice to say that it was a professional visit), and I couldn't help but notice enormous framed "Don't Tread on Me" and/or "Come and Take It" flags (I can't remember which, or if it was both, but likely just the latter) hanging in their living room, along with a tower of toilet paper packages (would've been enough for 5-10 households to survive the brief shortage) in the closet.
It may be that they had been stockpiling toilet paper "of old," but most likely, they rushed and bought up all the toilet paper they could get their hands on when they heard of the shortage.
I did not know them well, and did not have an opportunity (nor indeed the inclination) to inquire about it.
