Best part of researching local history? When it comes alive right in front of you.
At my 1999 talk, a retired fireman shared his story of battling flames as water pressure failed, residents bringing out milk and juice to help.
Then a voice from the audience: "John, is that you? You saved my house!"

That moment changed everything for me.
