Durante la Primera Guerra Mundial, Agatha Christie, a sus 24 años, se ofreció como enfermera voluntaria en un hospital de su ciudad natal, Torquay, en Devon, Inglaterra.
Aunque inicialmente se desmayaba al ver sangre, persistió en su labor y fue asignada al dispensario del hospital, donde desarrolló un profundo interés por los medicamentos y venenos.
Esta experiencia influyó notablemente en su obra literaria, ya que en 41 de sus 64 novelas, el método de asesinato es el envenenamiento.
Christie trabajó un total de 3.400 horas como auxiliar de enfermería durante la guerra, y su conocimiento sobre venenos se reflejó en sus historias de misterio.
