The captain of the Iranian women’s national football team has withdrawn her asylum request in Australia: she had fled from agents in Tehran.

The captain of Iran’s women’s national football team, Zahra Ghanbari, has withdrawn her asylum request: she is the fifth member of the delegation that participated in the Asian Cup in Australia to change her mind. This is reported by the Iranian news agency Irna, according to which Ghanbari will fly from Malaysia to Iran in the next few hours. In the days preceding this, three players and a member of staff had already withdrawn their respective asylum requests and had traveled to Kuala Lumpur. Human rights groups have repeatedly accused Iranian authorities of pressuring athletes abroad, threatening family members or seizing property in case of defections or statements against the Islamic Republic.

Approximately 5 days ago, Australia granted asylum to five members of Iran’s women’s national football team who were in the country to participate in the Asian Cup, including Zahra Ghanbari herself. This was requested out of fear of retaliation from the Tehran regime, after they refused to sing the national anthem before the match against South Korea. Following various international appeals and the intervention of Donald Trump, Canberra’s approval arrived shortly after: “They are welcome in Australia, they are safe, and they should feel at home,” said Home Minister Tony Burke.

The players in question were: Zahra Ghanbari and Zahra Sarbali, Fatemeh Pasandideh, Atefeh Ramezanizadeh and Mona Hamoudi. They had managed to escape from the hotel where the team was staying and seek help from the Australian government. The five athletes were captured on video, which then went viral on social media, while traveling by bus.
