#Syntakt received a landmark update and now also #Tonverk. Who are you and what have you done with the #Elektron we all know? Did they lay off their entire #marketing #department? Did they grow a consciousness and become self-aware?

I feel Syntakt would have been much different instrument if they had implemented the sample engine from day 1 as they did now, four years later with the update 1.4. Arguably better instrument. Arguably more focused and more suitable for the musos. At least for me.

Such a power move from #Elektron to create a simple #wavetable #synth for their #audio #sampler #Tonverk in firmware 1.3. In its essence it's a creative development of the single cycle waveform synth engine in #Digitakt and I was hoping to see something like this back in the day, but then the songmode and Loopcloud integration updates happened and it all went to downhill from there.

Still, good that they now did it. Tonverk starts to feel more and more like a real instrument. But no Overbridge

Under the hood modern #MPC is essentially a #linux #music #computer with a specific workflow. The same can be said about the new #Elektron #Tonverk but while Tonverk is merely a #sampler, MPC is also hosting #virtual #instruments and #effects #plugins, all visualised on the touch screen full colours. Tonverk does look notably cheaper but eventually, after adding the cost of external #instruments (all included into the MPC package), it is not.

However, it is far too early to say if #Tonverk is actually useful for what is designed to. Based on my previous experiences with #Elektron I would guess it would take about another year or so for them to mature the #firmware and bring out the entire #feature set. Personally, I'm not that keen on all that tracks-on-tracks concept and also the removal of the #sequencer page LEDs seem to be meh. #Digitakt is amazing because it's very straightforward. Not sure about this one yet.
Man, was I wrong about #Elektron #Tonverk. Despite the same #design cues it has nothing to do with Digitone. It's an upgrade for Digitakt mk2 for those who need that #multisample workflow. A curveball I wasn't expecting! However, I do understand the thinking behind that design. This is essentially a central device for the #synth #studios to bring their sound into the stage without the need for hauling the entire synth collection with you. So it's a #live #performance #instrument.

Of course that is just a speculation from my part and I have no knowledge of what the #Tonverk is or will be. However, I'm impressed by the external #design. #Elektron seems to be moving to a new interesting direction with Tonverk and will be providing something they haven't been able to since the lunch of Digitakt / Digitone 8 years ago. I feel there are many people still believing in Elektron and still waiting for something great from that company.
