Arnold Bax’s "The Tale the Pine-Trees Knew" is a revelation.
Bax wrote it to show that the forests of Scotland and Norway are one single spiritual landscape, separated only by water. It’s dark, turbulent, and majestic—sounding like the very earth of the North speaking. It proves geography binds us closer than borders ever could.

#AlsoSprachZarathustra, the epic #TonePoem by #RichardStrauss, was first performed in 1896 on #ThisDayInHistory. The piece was inspired by a #FriedrichNietzsche book of the same title, and its opening grew in fame after use in #StanleyKubrick's film 2001.

KMFA just played this piece, but It thought I would post it as I think it is Sibelius at his best in a digestible chunk.
Sibelius is like Kpop in attracting both passionate devotion on the one hand and antipathy and contempt on the other. I'm a devotee of both!

OK FINE: Here's the link to that #shortfilm, "Reticence", by my friend Robert Shults. He asked me to write a #tinnitus "#tonepoem" as an audio treatment.
He approached me because of a song he heard from my music project Glass Door. He actually paid me Hollywood scale rates for music composition, because some film festivals care about that sort of thing. I made a few bucks, and it was fun! Because of this, I have an IMDB credit.

After a night of infidelity, a man makes an insincere attempt to end his marriage. Due to the unique sound design of this film, the use of over-the-ear headphones…
"Väinämöinen luo kanteleen", a lovely piece by Erkki #Melartin. Can't find any recordings of it though. If you want to hear this piece in its entirety, join us in the "Myyttisiä sävelrunoja" (mythical tone poems) #concert on Nov 13 at the #Tampere University! The word is Old
#NatalieMacMaster “In My Hands” from In My Hands, 1999
Lyrics:
Through your voice I hear your stories
And in these hands they become my own
And the old times and old memories
Call to life beneath my bow
Natalie MacMaster had a thriving performing and recording career of traditional #Celtic #fiddling when she dropped this seemingly incongruous #TripHop flavored, #turntablist-tinged #TonePoem onto her sixth album,in fact choosing it to open the album and to provide its title. But it only takes a moment to realize that this makes perfect lyrical sense; it’s a love song…to her fiddle (and under a minute for the beloved’s answer on the track).
Why did this countrified niche-star take such a turn in style - an attempt to reach a younger, wider audience? Perhaps she saw opportunity after cousin and fellow #CapeBreton fiddler #AshleyMacIsaac's "Sleepy Maggie" hit modern radio. But turn she did, making the old new.
