A shootout happened in western Waikato, where police are searching for fugitive Tom Phillips and his children.

"A suspected burglar has been shot dead by a police officer in Waikato this morning, it is understood.

"RNZ reported the officer was shot and is in a serious condition, but the burglar had been shot dead."

"A second person was in custody."

The area is tightly locked down and nobody is confirming anything at this stage.

So sad to hear of the passing of artist Tom Phillips. He was one of life's true intellectuals that wore his wisdom lightly and had a fantastic sense of humour that put people instantly at ease. In a world full of pretension he was the real deal. But like all creators, his work in the visual arts and music will remain as the document of a life lived well. The product of an enquiring mind that never stopped absorbing information and offering inspiration to so many others.
