Day 1 of the Christopher Tolkien Centenary Conference was fantastic. So many wonderful talks by many scholars and folks whose essays and books are on my shelf.

Many thanks to the Tolkien Society for putting it all together. Looking forward to Day 2, though I'll have to miss some of the later bits with church and other family obligations.

Tolkien's Birthday Toast

Each year on the 3rd January, the Tolkien Society encourages Tolkien fans from across the world to celebrate The Professor's birthday with a simple toast-drinking ceremony.

At 9pm (your local time):
1. Stand
2. Raise a glass of your choice of drink (it need not be alcoholic)
3. Toast the birthday of the much loved author with the words 'The Professor'.
4. Take a sip (or swig) from your drink.
5. Then sit and enjoy the rest.
