The explanation that makes the most sense to me is that Eru's rising profile against the backdrop of #toitutetiriti was a threat to existing te pati Maori leadership, and his mother's expulsion was a sort of pre-emptive strategic move to maintain the Waititis seat in power.
The reasoning we were given, that Mariameno was apparently mismanaging funds, just doesn't quite add up. I think Eru's accusations on dictatorship landed harshly, but where there is uncomfortable pain, usually there is truth.
He was simply defending his mother, which is an honourable gesture. If people publicly humiliated my own, I'd probably do the same. Come for me, I can usually take the heat. Come for my whanau or loved ones however, you're getting hell.
Maoridom is like a big family. Disputes in a family are very normal and can be healthy for maintaining integrity in those relationships. How this feud has panned out however, has not been handled with care.
It is a distraction from the singular goal that our country needs to get behind: which is to kick this current government out to the curb.
A government that has been responsible for the most businesses shuttering, the largest exodus of young kiwis, a brain drain leaving for Australia, the worst for environmental degradation, and certainly the worst outcomes on every measure for Maori, way worse than whatever petty grievances these two families maybe engaging in.
If you feel that you can't get behind any of the political parties at the moment, that is absolutely a valid sentiment. None of them have shown they can lead us into the future with clarity. Which is why relying on loyalty to party colours is the wrong approach. There is corruption on all sides and it is up to kiwis to actually look at the policies being put forward and vote for the ones that would flush the foreign-backed neoliberal agenda down the toilet.
