Bishamon-dō Shōrin-ji (毘沙門堂勝林寺) was founded in 1550 by the 205th abbot of Tōfuku-ji, Kōgaku Reishō (高岳令松).

Frog in Japanese is 'kaeru' (蛙), a homonym for 'return' (返る). People thus pray for things like a safe journey, the return of good fortune, and so on.

In 1938 Mirei Shigemori (重森三玲) was commissioned to restore the gardens around the temple's Hōjō (方丈) as his first major work.

He created 4 unique 'karesansui' gardens (枯山水): North (北庭/市松の庭), West (西庭/井田の庭), South (南庭/前庭) and East (東庭/八相の庭).

1) TŌFUKU-JI (東福寺)🌉

It may be better known for its autumn colours, but during early summer hydrangeas bloom in and around the lush 'Sengyokukan' (洗玉澗), a narrow gorge spanned by the temple's famed Tsūten-kyō bridge (通天橋).

Founded by Kujō Michiie (九条道家) in 1236, Tōfuku-ji (東福寺) was one of the "five great Zen temples of Kyōto" (京都五山).

Already a holiday during the emperor's lifetime, it remained so after his death...rebranded first as 'Greenery Day' (みどりの日).

Shōrin-ji (勝林寺) is one of Tōfuku-ji's many sub-temples, and has the important role of protecting the vast temple complex from the unlucky north east 'kimon' (鬼門) direction.
It also has one of Kyōto's most gorgeous flower basins.

The temple was founded in 1550 by Kōgaku Reishō (高岳令松), the 205th abbot of Tōfuku-ji.
Dokushū Reitai (独秀令岱) later enshrined an old statue of Bishamonten as principal image.
