I knew about Marco Polo, & even Ibn Fadlan—but today, my hero is Pytheas (c.350 to c. 306 BCE). Navigator/astronomer from the Greek colony of Massalia (Marseille).
All we know of him is from later writers. In his lost book "Ocean," they read of his great voyage in the last days of Alexander. Britain, the Baltic, the Arctic, polar sea ice, Celtic & Germanic tribes, the midnight sun…then across the Med to the Black Sea. First to suggest the moon pulls the tides.
