Titus Canyon Exit

After taking a very enjoyable, somewhat nerve-wracking drive through Titus Canyon the road comes to an end. No this isn't the end but seems to be as you approach the cliff walls that are close to vertical.
Titus Canyon changes from a beautiful wide canyon and winds its way through a nearly vertical slot canyon.

Take the one way road just west of the old Nevada ghost town of Rhyolite. This road will allow for smaller SUVs but 4WD is recommended.

The Road To Titus Canyon

The Road To Titus Canyon is a photograph that I captured, you guessed it, on the road to Titus Canyon.
As seen in this photograph the road at this point is fairly mild. What I wasn't expecting is the beauty of the surrounding area.

Titus Canyon, Death Valley

Titus Canyon is a narrow, winding, one-way, 4-wheel drive road that cuts through the Grapevine Mountains of Death Valley starting in Nevada off of Highway 194, and coming out in Death Valley, California. See the map at the link below. Note: the Titus Canyon road and parking lot at west end are currently closed. Most of the rocks that make up the range are over half a billion years old - a very thick sequence of limestone/carbonate rocks formed at the edge of a warm tropical sea - the Bonanza King formation. Later, the sea regressed and the rocks were subjected to compressional forces with the formation of a subduction zone at the margin of California over 200 million years ago. The rocks were uplifted, faulted, folded, and in certain parts turned upside down. See the folds in the aerial below.

Another cool part of Titus Canyon is the famous Megabreccia. A breccia is a sedimentary rock composed of angular fragments of rock cemented in a fine-grained matrix. The picture is below. Geologist Shawn Willsey does a great job of showing these fantastic features in the quick video below.

This image almost got me in trouble.

A bunch of us were going through Titus Canyon, which you do as a caravan for safety. Cell signal is virtually nil.

I laid down to take this and some other pictures. My keys fell out of my pocket, and I only noticed when people started leaving. Found them as it was getting dark and starting to rain (in Death Valley!). Ever since then if I'm going off road my keys are attached to a large floaty orange thing.
