Striking contrast between the attitude toward parroting in current AI debates (#EmilyBender, #TimnitGebru et al.) and that of Lawrence #Lessig in relation to Creative Commons.

For Bender & co., parroting signals a lack of creativity and understanding:

‘an LM is a system for haphazardly stitching together sequences of linguistic forms
it has observed in its vast training data, according to probabilistic
information about how they combine, but without any reference to meaning: a stochastic parrot.'

For Lessig, it’s a core feature of creative productivity. There are some passages that seem to predate Latour and Stiegler by 4-5 decades, and it is positively uncanny to read this in a seminar where we discussed Timnit Gebru's great - and very recent - "TESCREAL" essay in the previous week.

Finished reading Timnit Gebru's paper on the AI engineered hype and the TESCREAL ideology. Very impressive! I guess it presents many of the intituitions and suspicions non-experts like myself have, expressed and developed by a critical and knowledgeable insider: dubious goals, labor exploitation, data theft, energy and resources issues... white supremacism... and media and political manipulation. Not bad...
As a critique to the text, it made me think of Latour an his world-laboratory concept. Nowadays, as with climate change, experiments which affect us the most, are not carried anymore in closed traditional labs, but in the real world. Monitoring and control systems for this kind of processes are still to be created.
