Just got back from an awesome performance of #Tuvan #ThroatSinging at a wonderful cafe across the river. I went with some friends, and it was definitely a good pick. The artist, #AlashEnsemble, can be found here: https://alashensemble.bandcamp.com/album/meni-mana

β€œYou know, the music business itself 30, 35 years ago was this incredible machine that was quite a beast… It's a machine that once it starts to roll, it rolls like crazy and you're just hanging on for dear life.”

Just because… This is Paul Pena with Kargyraa Moan. Paul was a blind bluesman and Morna singer. He learnt about #ThroatSinging from AM radio, and taught himself. He went to Tuva in 1995. That trip was filmed for the documentary Genghis blues.
Kargyraa is a style in which the false vocal folds are activated, which vibrate at half the speed of the vocal cords, producing an octave drop and audible harmonics. In this one I think he hits Gβ™―2.

What a surreal experience to have three members of Alash appear during a Bela Fleck show. Have you ever heard throat singers? They’re like birds and can produce harmony in one voice.

When Paul Pena wrote "Jet Airliner," he didn't think he'd ever fly to the center of Asia. I wrote about the fascinating man at https://tnocs.com/from-jet-airliner-to-tuvan-earthquake-the-astonishing-journey-of-paul-pena/
