On the easel today…

After six weeks of working on a larger canvas I am just not quite ready to share, I have started a 20 x16 inch oil on canvas of Arbutus Trees. Over the next couple of days I will finish it up wet-into-wet and then let it dry a bit possible before adding final highlights.

A new painting is finished. Edges are painted and “Letting Go of the Sky”, a 36 x 20 inch walnut oil on canvas by Terrill Welch, is released for consideration at:

Artist notes: I was raised by trees, not because I didn’t have loving parents. But because I spent so much time alone in the company of trees. Trees are great company. This particular Maple tree is excellent council on the strength of persistence and creativity. She is a gentle woman tree who guards the trail and brushes me with her falling leaves as she lets go of the southwest coast November sky…..

A Brush with Life - Issue #121 Best of 2022 and Hello 2023

What was that!? This is how I think of 2022. Continued monitoring and masking coupled with a new war and global financial uncertainty. However, here I am sprinting into 2023 with hardly a backward glance…

Terrill Welch

The latest painting is still on the easel and it is nowhere near completed. But the canvas seems to have a presence that I can work with again tomorrow or the day after… or maybe both days. We shall see.

After a morning painting in the studio, I went down to the shores of the Salish Sea on Mayne Island for a bit. Mount Baker was catching the last of the afternoon sun. A large first year Glaucous-winged Gull sat atop a sandstone rock while Surfbirds foraged at the water’s edge. A beautiful break in the weather making one more glad than usual to be alive.

This morning took us to Oyster Bay where the seals had moved in close to shore with the winter high tides. An eagle swooped in to land on a sandstone islet at one point. Then the sun came out. I never did make it into the art studio to work on a painting that is midway complete. 😉

From this morning’s hike…

Arbutus tree on the edge of a sandstone cliff overlooking Navy Channel from Saint John Point, Mayne Island, BC this morning. All the best and a #HappyThanksgiving to my American friends today.
