get proper helpings when we all start carving
now for once you must try to face the facts

Happy birthday to Kurt Weill/Bertolt Brecht's Die Dreigroschenoper (opened 8/31/1928 at Berlin’s Theater am Schiffbauerdamm)!

"Mankind is kept alive by bestial acts."

One of my heroes, #BertoltBrecht, seated outside the Theater am Schiffbauerdamm, where the #ThreePennyOpera was first performed in 1928, later bcoming the post-war home of Brecht's #BerlinerEnsemble. I took the photos in 2019.

@Dustin It's a film that fares the test of time quite well due to G. W. Pabst's direction and Bertolt Brecht's writing. Brecht had a largely uncredited influence on another timeless film (Mel Brooks' Blazing Saddles) due his development of the concept of "Epic Theater". #bertoltbrecht #gwpabst #ThreepennyOpera #MelBrooks
#ThreepennyOpera is an incredibly sophisticated & biting satire of the capitalist society where criminals & the law go hand in hand. Even beggars are categorized & commodified. Polly takes over & addresses the board of the bank, "One can rob a bank, or one can use a bank to rob others”. It ends with Peachum declaring allegiance to Mackie & Tiger-Brown. When asked "If the poor are so powerful why do they need us?" Peachum replies. "Because they don't know we need them." Indeed. #GWPabst #musical
I've been reading parts of Bob Dylan's intriguing book "The Philosophy of Modern Song". He has a section on Bobby Darin (born Walden Cassotto) and claims his performance of Mac the Knife to be excellent. I like Darin, but I think I prefer Ella Fitzgerald's "live in Berlin" performance of it:

And on that topic: who would like to see @amandapalmer cover Mac the Knife?
