I was in an online writing workshop about books written in three-act structures, and how to avoid that saggy middle. The instructor chose several books as examples, including Tolkien’s Fellowship of the Rings. When I asked how that worked considering the three volumes of LotR were originally supposed to be one book, making Fellowship the first act, the instructor told me he was just going to ignore my question. That kinda felt like getting slapped across the face. Ah well. Guess he’s just trying to shoehorn books into structures they don’t follow. Or am I missing something here? In any case, I left because I didn’t feel comfortable with being dismissed like that when I thought my question was valid.
