The highlight of my very brief wander round #Köln (an hour between trains) was going to be the ambulances, whose sirens smoothly change key on approach to traffic lights. No idea if that's automatic, or if the copilot was in a 90s boy band.

But then I refound Stövchen, a proper old school cafe. Plants, books, old furniture, old regular customers, two brothers behind the bar. And vegetarian sauerkrautsuppe with a beer for €10.

Train 1 is the southbound Caledonian Sleeper from Edinburgh Waverley.
Handily, despite it departing at 2340, it is already after midnight in the CEST timezone, so for #Interrail purposes, this journey starts on Wednesday, saving a whole pass day (and nominally at least £25).
A seat on the sleeper (not a berth) is covered by the pass, so it's fair to say this entire 500 mile trip is cost free.
Question is: do you get what you pay for?
