The US #RepublicanParty/#GOP was founded in Wisconsin on #ThisDayInHistory in 1854. Initially pursuing #liberal & centre-left politics with a federalist bent, it gradually shifted rightward through #progressivism, then moderate #conservatism, and finally into #FarRight #populism.

Orders for creation of the long-running #Dachau #ConcentrationCamp were given #ThisDayInHistory in 1933 by #HeinrichHimmler. It was initially for leftists (#socialists, #communists) but it and satellite labour camps were used for #Roma, Jews, & others. Torture there was the norm.
The United States launched the #IraqWar on #ThisDayInHistory in 2003, causing 650,000 Iraqi deaths, more than the Baathists killed in a longer period. US troops were despatched to guard the oil ministry, but Iraq's #oil — nationalized in 1972 — wasn't a reason for war, oh no. /s
