As a little girl I was called "quiet and shy". And they were right. I didn't really have a close friend growing up due to frequent moving. I kept to myself.

In Middle School, this song was my best friend. Gossamer was one of my favorite CDs all through High School, it was my comfort play.

Crush didn't requite their feelings? "I get carried away..." They did? "Constant Conversations." They realize I'm a bit extra (what teenage girl isn't?) "Love is greed." Summer break, about to fall into a lake backward? "Mirrored Sea." Met my present day best friend forever and went to my prom single? "Where We Belong."

Minnie Riperton - Rainy Day in Centerville

Her best known song started a generation of women in pursuit of the hard-to-find whistle register (and far fewer men who could ever successfully find it. Conchita Wurst's beautiful voice being a key example!) But Minnie was an accomplished singer of anything she dared to try.

I have yet to see someone cover Minnie's music apart from Loving You, which is a shame. She deserves far more attention. 💜 https://youtu.be/ST5aY3py4Nw
