As a #thirdculture #POC kid on an all-white team with no interest in sports, I was basically excluded from the solid 20+min watercooler opening chat on Teams re: Canada's Olympic Men's Hockey loss & the NHL players on the national teams.
It's times like those a) I'm glad I don't overshare my personal life (bc I don't relate to any of them) & b) I want to just shut off my camera & surf/scroll non-work stuff until it's over & back to work meeting part. I end up just continuing work on my other screens while they chat, not engaging.
Any of you in similar boats have suggestions on how to dip out until they get on track? Next time I should just "brb"" in the chat, but then I would think that would make them idle chat more until I return.

My dad, my sister, my mother and myself walking along a path up in Puncak (the mountains south of Bogor where expats and well-off residents rented bungalows for the weekend).

1969 maybe? How old do I look there?

(and I'm not going to go into analysis of how our walking arrangement could be seen to reflect what was going on in our family at the time, fully unknown to me then of course)

By your description I wouldn't be local to Australia or my home country, and neither would my parents.

My family moved to Aus in 1999 and have been here since. I've visited my home country maybe a total of 4 times in the 20 years I lived in Aus. I experienced all of my major life milestones in Aus: schooling, graduation, jobs, car license, marriage, etc.

I have lived in Dubai now for 3 years, and I feel like I'm somewhere in between. I'm not really an expat living here since this is a long term move for us. My daughter was born here. However, I have lived here long enough that I know hidden gems, and understand local social norms and culture quite well. And by all means, I call it home.

My husband's family has been here for 3 generations and 40+ years, but they're still considered 'expats'. This is a common experience for those in his generation. The language around 'expat', 'local', and 'native' is very different to what I encountered in Aus, which has been an interesting experience and opened a lot of dialogue.
