El usar antihipertensivos de tipo bloqueadores de receptor II de angiotensina, tiazidas o calcioantagonistas dihidropiridínicos disminuyen hasta 24% el riesgo de arterioesclerosis, además que disminuyen la carga degenerativa neuronal que se asocia a ciertos tipos de demencia (principalmente enfermedad de Alzheimer) con mayor eficacia que otros antihipertensivos.
